WHS SOFTBALL: Wildcats Fall To Burlington High In Bunt-Based Blowout

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Softball team (2-2) lost to Burlington High by a score of 10-1 on Thursday, April 25, 2019.

The Wildcats hadn’t played in a week and the layoff certainly showed itself.

The inexperienced infield could not handle the short game attack of Burlington. Burlington was relentless with executing bunt after bunt and it was not until the fifth inning that the Wildcats finally settled down and played the type of defense that they have been accustomed to. Unfortunately, due to the dominant Burlington pitching, the game was already out of reach.

Wilmington never quit. Jenna Swenney broke up the no-hitter attempt in the 7th inning. Chase Anderson scored to prevent the shutout.

“Our bunt defense was definitely exploited,” said Coach Audrey Cabral. “With 5 new players in the infield, we understood how inexperience was going to surface at some time.  We have work to do in both executing our own short game as well as defending it. These will be the focus of our next practices. ”
