WILMINGTON, MA — Michael M. Gustin of Wilmington, MA passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on April 12, 2019. He was 65 years old.
Michael was born on June 5, 1953 in Montclair, NJ to Grant Montgomery and Helen Elizabeth Gustin. He spent his childhood in Oxford, NY, and moved to the Boston area for college. He met his wife of forty years, Joanne, at Lowell Tech, where he studied mechanical engineering. He later studied for and received his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University while starting his family.
Michael was an engineer’s engineer, who measured everything five times, and only then cut. He had an infectious laugh and was a connoisseur of really bad dad jokes. His Scoutmaster minutes with Troop 56 in Wilmington were legendary. He loved walking his dogs, finding new recipes, tinkering with computers, talking about directions, camping and hiking with his sons, making a mess in his wood shop, and spending time at Goose Rocks Beach in Maine.
If you knew Michael, you knew how deep his feelings ran for his family, his friends, and his dogs (not necessarily in that order). He cherished his lifelong friendships and was a supportive and deeply invested colleague at his various engineering firms. His wife Joanne was his best friend and their relationship was an example that anyone should be so lucky to follow.
He felt his greatest accomplishment in life was helping his three children, Amanda, Jason, and Nick begin their own paths with their partners and families. He took pride and joy in supporting them in their careers, homes, and children.
On any given weekend he could be found at one of his children’s houses helping them start (but never finish) projects. He was especially beloved by his grandsons Pierce and Holden and would have loved to meet his newest grandson.
He is survived by his mother Betty, his wife Joanne, his brothers Steve, Jeff, and David, and his children and their families: Amanda Gustin and husband Matt Lindblad of Barre, VT; Jason and Lisa Gustin and their sons Pierce and Holden of Candia, NH; Nick and Elyssa Gustin and their newborn son of Topsfield, MA.
Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA on Friday, April 26th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Funeral Home on Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Animal Welfare Society of Kennebunk Maine.
