WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Softball team opened its season by defeating Woburn High at Library Park in Woburn on Thursday, April 11, 2019 by a score of 5-3.
The Wildcats got off to an early start by scoring two runs in the first and second innings. Kayla Bourrell reached on an infield error. Jenna Sweeney got the first hit for the Cats with a single to center. After Ally Moran moved the runners along, first basemen Bella Kieran smashed a 2-RBI single to right.
In the second inning, Chase Andersen (BB) and Ashley Crawford (reach on error) scored on Kayla Bourrell’s single to center.
In the third inning, Woburn came roaring back with three runs of their own after a bases loaded triple. Ally Moran struck out the next batter to strand the player at third.
The Cats scored their final run in the sixth after a triple by Jenna Sweeney and an RBI single by Ally Moran.
In the seventh inning, with the Tanners threatening, Kayla Bourrell made a great defensive play and got a force out at third with Chase Anderson covering. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ally ended the game with another strikeout.
Both Jenna Sweeney (2-3, triple, 2 runs scored) and Bella Kieran (3-4, 2 RBI) had monster days at the plate. Ryan Bailey and Ashley Crawford also hit the ball hard, but great plays were made by Woburn defense.
“This was a great way to open a season,”said coach Audrey Cabral. “We are inexperienced but we made all the plays that we needed to today. Two things that we learned from today’s game is that we missed some signs and we have to do a better job at sliding.”
Pitcher Ally Moran allowed just five hits while striking out 14 in the contest.
