Richard was born on September 5, 1929; he was the son of Charles J. And Helen Mary Boulton. Richard was raised and educated in Waltham and a 1947 graduate of Waltham High School. He was known as the “one man track team” and played football.
Richard, “Dick”, had many friends and was raised in a large, loving family. His happy place was spending summers at his family’s homestead in Deer Isle Maine.
In 1948, while in college, he joined R.O.T.C and focused his studies on Engineering and Theology. Dick graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts in Math in 1951.
This lead him to the Seminary; Demont Fathers of Hartford City, IN and later transferred to Litchfield, CT.
Dick was called to a different path in life and was voluntarily drafted to the US Army 1954. He attended basic training at Fort Dix and stationed in Germany for Radar school until 1957.
On June 21, 1958, he married the love of his life Patricia Mullaney; a love that lasted 60 years. During that time, they settled in Wilmington and raised three wonderful children: Michael, Maria, and Beth and spent summers at York Beach Maine. Dick and Pat also cherished their time as grandparents to Jessica and Gerard.
He worked at W.R. Grace in Cambridge as the Senior Draftsman Engineer for most of his career. Later, working for BioPure in Boston before retiring.
Dick and Pat soon became involved in Marriage Encounter program and St. Thomas of Villanova Church for many years. Dick was a man of great faith, volunteering his time as a Lecturer and Eucharistic Minister at the same church and bringing Holy Communion to the ill and shut-in’s of the parish. He served funeral Masses and ran the Sunday night Prayer Group (Rosary). Richard was awarded the Archdiocese of Boston Cheverus Award November 22, 2009. He was involved with Medjorgorie and made a Holy Pilgrimage there in 1998 with Pat.
Dick and Pat volunteered 25 years of their time bringing love, prayers and Communion to the residents at Wilmington Health Care Nursing Home Centers. He was recognized for many years by the Commonwealth of MA for unwavering community service/volunteer work. He was most proud of all his service work to Church and God.
Dick was active along with Pat with the Wilmington Senior Center. They enjoyed long walks. He had a lifelong passion for jogging; on work lunches, breaks, and around town – 5 to 10 miles daily. He had a love of science, NASA, the sky and stars above. He had a dry sense of humor which started at his Grandfather’s knee being read quotes from Ogden Nash. He was very good at writing poetry and rhyming. Dick was a jack of all trades, creating and fixing just about anything. Always willing to help out neighbors and friends.
He was known to some as a hero, a quiet man that had something important to say when he did speak. He adored Maine Coon cats, raised 2 dogs of his own, Bamba and Snoopy, captured and spayed neighborhood strays, rescued 2 feral cats, Whiskers and his beloved Ferra.
Richard will forever be loved by his family, friends, community and missed by all who knew him.
