WILMINGTON, MA — At this week’s Wilmington School Committee Meeting, Chair Julie Broussard and her colleague Tom Talbot announced they would not be seeking re-election this April.
“I wholeheartedly thank the voters who supported me for the past two years. After careful thought and consideration, I’m not going to run for re-election for a third term,” Broussard announced at the end of the meeting. “I wanted to share that with all of you, and the public, at the same time. I don’t want my situation to be a distraction for the work we have left to do.”
“I also won’t be re-upping my seat on the School Committee. I’ll be stepping down,” added Talbot. “So there’s another open spot.”
The third incumbent — Jo Newhouse — has pulled nomination papers to run for re-election. Newhouse, a former Wilmington SEPAC Chair, was just appointed to the Committee this summer after longtime member Peggy Kane resigned.
Jesse Fennelly, the runner-up in last April’s election and in August’s appointment process, has also pulled nomination papers.
According to Assitstant Town Clerk Linda Golden, here are how things stand as of January 11:
Wilmington Board of Selectmen — 2 seats — 3-year terms
- Greg Bendel (incumbent) — pulled papers on 1/3 — returned on 1/11, not yet certified
- Kevin Caira (incumbent) — pulled papers on 1/4 — has not returned yet
Wilmington School Committee — 3 seats — 3-year terms
- Jo Newhouse (incumbent) — pulled papers on 1/4 — has not returned yet
- Jesse Fennelly (challenger) — pulled papers on 1/7 — has not returned yet
Shawsheen Tech School Committee — 1 seat — 3-year term
- Robert Peterson Sr. (incumbent) — pulled papers on 1/3 — has not returned yet
To get on the ballot, nomination papers, with at least 50 valid signatures from Wilmington voters, are due back to the Town Clerk by Friday, March 8.
The Annual Town Election will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Polls will be open from 8am to 8pm.
