WILMINGTON, MA — On Wednesday, December 3 at 4:55am, Wilmington Police received a phone call from a Woburn Street resident, who reported a black 2009 Ford Escape SUV had been parked outside her residence for several hours.
As police responded, the driver fled on foot, but was quickly tracked down and taken into custody. During the brief foot pursuit, however, the man discarded several packets of fentanyl.
Police arrested Thomas M. Lafrance (27, Fitchburg) for Trafficking In More Than 10 Grams Of Fentanyl & Operating A Motor Vehicle With A Suspended License (Subsequent Offense).
Police requested a K9 to help locate the narcotics and paraphernalia the suspect dropped in the area of Woburn Street, Great Neck Drive, Allgrove Lane, and Marcia Road. Police was especially concerned due to the high traffic of children in the area.
No K9 teams were immediately available. The State Police’s K9 team was unable to respond as it has a policy against exposing its dogs to fentanyl. Melrose Police’s K9 team eventually responded to assist in the search. Additional narcotics were located and secured.
