WILMINGTON, MA — Joanne Benton dedicated more than a decade of her life, including her final months, to the children of Wilmington. She served as Wilmington’s Assistant School Superintendent (2004-2007), School Superintendent (2007-2014), and Interim School Superintendent (October 2016-March 2017).
In recognition of her contributions to Wilmington Public Schools, and her integral role in the construction of the new Wilmington High School, Town Meeting voters saw fit this past April to overwhelmingly naming the school auditorium in her honor.
At Wednesday night’s School Committee meeting, it was announced that the dedication ceremony for the Joanne Benton Auditorium will take place on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2pm. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
A committee was formed and has been meeting for the past several months to plan the event. Committee members include Assistant Superintendent Paul Ruggiero; Assistant Director of Administration & Finance Jacqui Raffi; WHS Principal Linda Peters; Wilmington High Band Director Barbara Mette; Director of Public Buildings George Hooper; Former Town Manager Mike Caira; Former School Committee member Peggy Kane; and current School Committee members Steve Bjork and MJ Byrnes.
“It’s really shaping up to be a wonderful event,” Byrnes announced at a recent School Committee meeting. “There will be a handful of speakers and multiple performances that really showcase our performing arts program.”
More details will be announced publicly as the event draws closer.
