OBITUARY: Walter A. Lawler, 90

WILMINGTON, MA — Walter A. Lawler, age 90, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2018, at Ashland Farm in North Andover.

Walter was born on March 5, 1928 in Cambridge, MA; he was the dear son of the late Walter and Adeline Lawler. Walter grew up in Somerville but spent lots of time at the family farm in Wilmington with his Witherspoon grandparents. Walter graduated Somerville High School with the Class of 1946 and in June of 1946 he enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War II.

Walter served with the 604th Aircraft Central Squadron as a radar repairman with the rank of Corporal; he earned the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal; he was honorably discharged on June 17, 1949. On August 9, 1950, he was called from inactive service and bravely returned to duty with first U. S. Air Force to serve in the Korean Conflict. Walter served as a rank of Sergeant with the 773D AC& W Squadron with his duties as a radio mechanic II; he was honorably discharged from active duty in August of 1951 and transferred to the U. S. Air Force Reserves.

In April 1955, Walter married the “love of his life” Lillian Michaud; the couple settled in Wilmington and raised seven children. Walter built their home on a parcel of his grandparents farm land where many wonderful childhood memories were made.

Walter was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather; he was a strong support system for his children and showed them the meaning of unconditional love. Walter beamed with pride as he spoke of his family and the wonderful adults that they had become. Walter will be fondly remembered as a humble, caring man with a strong work ethic who was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. Walter loved his family and friends with all his heart and he will forever be missed.

Walter was proud to serve his country during two Wars and he became a life member of the VFW Post 2458 in Wilmington, the NARFE Chapter 479, the State Guard for the USAAC, USAF and USAFR. Walter was also a member of the Wakefield Retired Men’s Club where he made many friends throughout the years.

Walter was the beloved husband of the late Lillian A. (Michaud) Lawler, devoted father of Cheryl Stewart & her husband Bob of Trumbull, CT, Glenn Lawler & his partner Annette Angelo of Holliston, MA, Timothy Lawler & his wife Diana of Canton, CT, Dorothy Pearl & her husband Rob of Medway, Brian Lawler & his wife Laurie of Andover, Suzanne & her partner Russ Russo of Portsmouth, NH and Paul Lawler & his wife Lynn of Lebanon, ME, loving “Papa” of Kate, Brenna, Meghan, Cristina, Stephanie, Christopher, Patrick, Tyler, Molly, Tanner, Meredith, Madison, Olivia, Jordan, Kayli and great-grandchildren Xander and Cleo, cherished son of the late Walter E. and Adeline (Witherspoon) Lawler.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Friday, September 28th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, on Saturday, September 29th at 10:00 a.m. (Please go directly to Church.) Interment with Military Honors to follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
