Dear Community Members,
On the 10th Anniversary of 9/11/01, a committee of students in Wilmington formed to educate future generations about the events of this tragic day. We cannot thank you enough for your support of the Wilmington 9/11 Memorial that was designed by students and paid for through community fundraising efforts over 7 years. Now, we are using this memorial to as educational tool for students that have little or no memory of that day. Student members of the 9/11 Memorial Committee design educational assemblies, research and share personal stories and explain the significance of the design and layout of the memorial in the WHS courtyard.
9/11 Day is the nation’s largest annual Day of Service, recognized and established under federal law. Last year more than 40 million Americans spent time on 9/11 helping others through good deeds, including more than one million students of all ages.
For the past few years, Wilmington High School has joined the 9/11 Day movement to make this event a day of service and remembrance. We invite you to pledge to do a 9/11 good deed with us. Consider making a pledge, sharing it with our community and challenging your own friends and family to join us.
In addition, we are asking for your help in giving students ideas for pledges they can make on 9/11 Day, even if they can’t be carried out until later in the year. We are compiling of list of events and projects from the local community that will require volunteers throughout the 2018/2019 school year. If you are in need of student volunteers for an event or project, we would love it if you could give us some information on this form. If you know of another community member or organization that could use some help and support, feel free to forward them this message. In turn, we will share these pledges with you so you can recruit these volunteers as needed.
Lastly, the 9/11 Memorial Committee is hosting an evening fundraiser on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, from 4pm-11pm at the Wilmington 99 Restaurant and support this year’s Wilmington 9/11 Committee’s annual 9/11 Day fundraiser. We plan to raise money to support the Local Heroes Club, which works with Veterans by uplifting their spirits and making our students aware of the sacrifices they make to keep us safe and free and, to let them know they are not forgotten. They do this by sending letters, gift bags, marching in parades, visiting Veterans hospitals, maintaining the Veterans Pictorial Display, etc. to expressing our gratitude and appreciation for their commitment. If you join us that evening, please show them this voucher so we can get credit for your visit, which includes take-out orders.
Thank you very much for your time and support,
The WHS 9/11 Memorial Committee
