5 QUICK QUESTIONS with Wilmington Writer Judi Dettorre

WILMINGTON, MA — Below are five quick questions with Wilmington writer Judi Dettorre.

Background

Dettorre is a member of one of the Wilmington Memorial Library’s writing groups. Dettorre contributed to the groups’ brand new anthology, “The Writers Next Door.”

A book launch event is taking place on Monday, August 20 at 7pm at the Wilmington Memorial Library. At the launch, the book’s writers will participate in a panel discussion and a book selling/signing. Refreshments will be served. All proceeds from book sales will be donated to Friends of the Library.

#1) What is the story you contributed to the anthology called? What is it about? Why did you write it?

I contributed two poems and a personal essay. The first poem “Butterfly” is a coming of age poem while the second poem “My Home” is about living on the beach. My personal essay “Madness or Genius?” is a humorous look at my large family trekking to Lenten Services.

#2) Why did you join the library’s Writing Group? Do you find it beneficial?

I recently retired from my previous career and one main reason was to devote myself to writing more consistently. I think of being a poet and author as the next chapter in my work life. I was looking for a group to learn with and for accountability. WML writings groups are encouraging, knowledgeable, and supportive. They are a great group of fellow writers and I’m grateful to the library for providing this service.

#3) Have you written anything else outside the group? Where can my readers find your other works?

While I’ve been writing poems and stories for years (I don’t want to give away my age so I can’t say exactly how long) this is my first time being published. I have recently submitted my poetry to a few magazines so stay tuned for more on those publications. You can follow me on “www.facebook.com/JudiDettorre,author and poet”

#4) What advice would you give to other aspiring Wilmington writers?

Believe in yourself and find time everyday to write. If you hit a roadblock be gentle with yourself. Read books about the craft of writing. Finally find a group of like-minded people for support and encouragement.

#5) What are you looking forward to the most regarding the Book Launch Event on August 20?

I’m so proud of all the hard work each and every member of “The Writers Next Door” has put into this book and they are a wonderful group to work with. I’m most looking forward to seeing my words in print and knowing that I overcome the internal critic to take this big step.
