TEWKSBURY, MA — Below is a statement issued by the Tewksbury Republican Town Committee on Wednesday, July 18 regarding “ongoing efforts of the Massachusetts Democratic Party to make Massachusetts a Sanctuary State for illegal immigrants,” followed by responses from State Representative candidates Mark Kratman (D-Tewksbury) and Dave Robertson (D-Tewksbury), who are mentioned in the statement.
Statement From The Tewksbury Republican Town Committee
Massachusetts is currently the only state in the union without a fiscal budget for 2019/2020. We’re now more than two weeks past the June 30 deadline. Why you might ask? There’s an ongoing debate between members of the Budget Conference Committee over an amendment that was passed by the State Senate in late May that would prevent local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE. This policy end around makes the Commonwealth a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants.
But this effort should come as no surprise. On page 10 of the Massachusetts Democratic Party Platform it states that “Democrats will fight for becoming a Sanctuary State.”
There are two Tewksbury Democrats running for the State Rep seat in the 19th Middlesex District:
David Roberston (D-Tewksbury), who has joined forces with Senator Elizabeth Warren in voicing their opposition to ICE. Robertson told the Wilmington Apple on July 4 “ICE is disgraceful.” And Mark Kratman (D-Tewksbury), who sought and received Barbara L’Italien’s endorsement. L’Italien is one of the most outspoken advocates for becoming a Sanctuary State and has fought to protect sanctuary status and taxpayer funding for the city of Lawrence. L’Italien helped jam the sanctuary amendment into the State Senate’s budget. Her endorsement is a clear indication that she believes Kratman is the one who best matches her ideals and principles. Unfortunately, that spells trouble for the taxpayers of Tewksbury and Wilmington.
In June, the Tewksbury RTC unanimously endorsed Pina Prinzivalli (R-Tewksbury) for State Representative in the 19th Middlesex District. Since launching her campaign last October, Pina has been the only outspoken candidate in her opposition to becoming a Sanctuary State. On September 4, we urge the voters of Tewksbury and Wilmington to pull a Republican ballot and vote for the bold Republican voice that will say “NO” to Massachusetts becoming a Sanctuary State for illegal immigrants, Pina Prinzivalli.
Ruth Chou is the chairman of the Tewksbury Republican Town Committee and the Republican State Committeewoman for the 2nd Essex and Middlesex District.
Responses From Mark Kratman & Dave Robertson
Many Kratman and Robertson supporters have been in touch with Wilmington Apple to argue that the Tewksbury Republican Town Committee’s statement is misleading and conflating issues. While Mark Kratman is being endorsed by Barbara L’Italien, Kratman is firmly against Massachusetts becoming a sanctuary state. And while Dave Robertson did refer to ICE as “disgraceful,” Robertson is against Massachusetts becoming a sanctuary state, wants ICE to be fixed (not abolished), and asks people to look at the actual context in which he used the word “disgraceful.”
Wilmington Apple reached out to both candidates for their responses to the Tewksbury Republican Town Committee’s criticisms.
“The Tewksbury Republican Town Committee is obviously trying to mislead the public. They’re not giving out truthful information about other candidates’ platforms. It’s mudslinging,” Mark Kratman told Wilmington Apple. “I’ve clearly come out and told the press that I’m NOT in favor of Massachusetts becoming a santucary state. I’ve spoken to residents about it. I’ve mentioned it while at events. [The Republican Town Committee] can try to mislead people, but anyone who knows me knows I’m a man of my word. I’m against Massachusetts becoming a sanctuary state. Period.”
During a Q&A with Wilmington Apple earlier this month, Kratman came out against Massachusetts becoming a sanctuary state. Kratman wrote: “I do not believe that we should become a sanctuary state but rather make it easier for hard working families that believe in the dream of becoming a proud American and raise their families here looking for a better life.”
“The Tewksbury Republican Town Committee is making a completely false claim against me,” Dave Robertson told Wilmington Apple. “I absolutely believe there needs to be ICE, but it needs to be fixed. The word ‘disgraceful’ was used in relation to the act of separating children from their mothers. The administration, by its own admission, lost track of some of the children. That’s certainly not a functioning system! And, for the record, Elizabeth Warren is – in no way – involved in my campaign.”
During a Q&A with Wilmington Apple earlier this month, Robertson came out against Massachusetts becoming a sanctuary state. Robertson wrote: “I believe that Massachusetts will harm itself as a sanctuary state, and instead should focus on helping legal immigrants gain education, start businesses, and become a part of society.”
During the same Q&A, Robertson wrote the following about ICE: “Immigration is controlled by the federal government and is a contentious topic of the day. I, for one, believe the federal government is concentrating too much on who is here already without stopping the flow. It’s like mopping up a puddle while the pipe is still leaking! ICE is unbelievably broken and disgraceful, especially when compared to itself years ago, and both sides in Washington are refusing to compromise. In fact, they haven’t had any truly strong showing at fixing our immigration issue since the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” proposed immigration overhaul years ago that was logical. I also believe that felonies have occurred regarding the treatment of immigrants being detained; what has emerged needs to be investigated.”
