STATE REP RACE: Judy O’Connell Supports United Steelworkers During National Grid’s Lockout

WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a press release from State Representative candidate Judy O’Connell (D-Wilmignton):

I would like to express my strong support of the United Steelworker Locals 12003 and 12012-4 during the current lockout by National Grid. It is outrageous and unjust that a Fortune 500, multi-billion dollar company has cancelled the healthcare benefits of 1,200 union members who perform critical work across Massachusetts for residential homes, schools and businesses.

In reviewing the proposed changes reported from recent contract negotiations it is clearly evident that the proposed terms will have a detrimental financial impact on wages and benefits for all members. Additionally, I am extremely concerned about the current public safety risks as National Grid is currently using inexperienced contractors with insufficient inspectors and monitors to complete daily work assignments. This action is irresponsible and downright dangerous!

As a candidate for State Representative, I would like to specifically offer my support for the United Steelworkers of Wilmington and Tewksbury who have been directly impacted by this lockout. I would like to applaud your efforts to negotiate in good faith and for your offer to continue working without a contract. You have my respect and support as you continue to fight this battle.

Judy O’Connell
Democratic Candidate for State Representative
19th Middlesex District for Wilmington and Tewksbury
