WILMINGTON, MA — The American Cancer Society recently presented Joe Martiniello of Wilmington with a Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award. The award is the most honored accolade by the Society in New England, and it recognizes Martiniello’s remarkable accomplishments in support of the Society’s mission to celebrate lives, to save lives and to lead the fight for a world without cancer.
For more than 10 years, Martiniello has been part of the Relay For Life of Wilmington, Billerica, Tewksbury fundraiser walk, raising awareness and funds to support the fight against cancer. In recent years, Martiniello has served on the Relay’s Event Leadership Team and played a critical role in helping bring together the communities of Wilmington, Billerica and Tewksbury under one movement to fight cancer. His deep passion and Relay expertise has been essential in helping the Relay For Life event reach the $1 million milestone last year in donations raised since the event first started running.
“As these relay For Life events merged, we saw Joe encourage all volunteers’ ideas, include them in every decision and work with all groups to utilize best practices from both events, and even held a meeting at his home to promote socialization,” said Dennis Cataldo, member of the Eastern New England Board, American Cancer Society. “The inclusiveness that Joe brought to this event has been a positive influence. We are so lucky to have a volunteer like Joe be part of our Relay For Life community.
The Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award is named in honor of the late Sandra C. Labaree, a long-time American Cancer Society volunteer from Maine. Despite her death from breast cancer in 2000, Labaree’s spirit and values live on through this award. Each year, the local area Board selects the most inspired and passionate individuals to receive this prestigious honor whose service best exemplifies the Society’s organizational values of mission, stewardship, diversity, data-driven, and respect.
