WHS Softball Senior Profile: Adele Burton

WILMINGTON, MA — This is the second in a series of profiles celebrating the five recent WHS graduates who played on this year’s varsity softball team.

Adele Burton

Adele began her Wilmington softball career in 3rd grade, but stopped after one season. She had played soccer in town since 1st grade, realized it probably wasn’t the sport for her, but liked being on a team. Her parents told her that she should give softball another try since she had a good arm, eyesight and hand/eye coordination and running wasn’t as big of a deal, unlike soccer -running was never Adele’s strong point.

The Wilmington Rec department offered and Adele attended a preseason hitting clinic in Burlington and then a softball skills clinic at Simmons College. On the last drill of the skills clinic, Adele rolled her ankle and broke it – all this before even starting a practice with her rec team. Adele was placed on Coach Tim Kieran’s team, but she couldn’t play or practice for several weeks. When she finally did play she was still slowed by the broken foot, however Coach Tim saw something in her and encourage her to continue to playing.

The next year playing on Coach Tim’s team (following another broken foot that happened at the Simmons College clinic), Adele found out that 3rd base was her natural position since you need a strong arm and hand/eye coordination. Coach Tim picked her to play on his summer tournament team, the Nor’easters out of Tewksbury (where they practiced during the winter and played during the summer) and she also played for him on the Wilmington Rec travel team.

In 2014 Wilmington offered 8th graders the chance to play on the high school freshman team, coached by Coach Billy. Although Adele had only played softball less than 2 years, some of which was shorted due two foot brakes, she impressed enough to start at 3rd base for the team. The freshman team practiced every day with Coach Billy and played games against teams that were often older and more experienced – it was a great situation for Adele and her teammates.

When Adele was a freshman she tried out for the Wilmington HS team, coached by Coach Audrey and Coach Walter. She hadn’t played softball as long as some of the other girls, but the hitting and Simmons College clinics, rec league and tournament teams coaching from Coach Tim and 8th grade team coaching from Coach Billy gave her a lot of experience in a short period of time and she made varsity.

Adele ended up starting at 3rd base as a freshman (part of an all-freshman infield), has played on varsity for four years, was named a captain her senior year and the Wildcats made the state tournament every year.

This fall Adele will be attending WPI, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
