Lecture on Daniel Ellsberg & The Pentagon Papers by Gary Hylander
Friday, June 15, 11am, Activity Room
Gary Hylander holds a Doctorate in Presidential History and is a scholar entirely impassioned by his subject matter. This month’s topic is: Daniel Ellsberg: The Pentagon Papers. Secretly directed by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, Daniel Ellsberg (along with other policy analysts) were asked to prepare a full review of American military and political involvement in Vietnam since the end of World War II. What followed was a 7,000-page expose revealing that American policymakers had systemically lied to the public, journalists and Congress about America’s involvement throughout all of Indochina since 1945. “As a responsible citizen,” said Ellsberg, “I believed it to be my moral responsibility to leak the Papers to the press to end a wrongful war.” Ellsberg was subsequently charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 for conspiracy, espionage and theft of government property.
