Wilmington Youth Hockey Families Have Opportunity To Become ‘Billet Host Families’

WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a message from Wilmington Youth Hockey Association’s Board of Directors:

“Billeting” is a hockey tradition and is especially important at the junior level. This concept involves local host families providing a surrogate home to out-of-state/country players. The billet program allows these players to complete their high school education, take college level courses and/or obtain part time employment in the local community while taking their hockey careers to the next level.

The Boston Junior Rangers (BJRs) are looking to the local communities for support. They are currently accepting applications for families to host these amazing young men during the hockey season. The BJRs value the importance of host families who open their homes to our players and appreciate the efforts made by the entire family.  Having a player in your home takes time, patience and a willingness to share while appreciating the cultural and personal differences that become a part of the rewarding experience for both the host family and billet player.

Host families serve as authority figures, role models and extended family to their assigned player. For many players, this is their first experience away from home, family and friends and the host family becomes a very important part of their lives. While hosts receive a monetary stipend of $550 per months to help off-set some of the basic costs such as food and utilities, the true rewards are in the lasting relationships that are formed.

If you are interested in becoming a host family to a Boston Junior Ranger Hockey player, please contact Gina Daniels at ginadaniels.bjr@gmail.com for additional information.  Gina has personal experience in this wonderful experience having the joy in hosting 3 amazing boys last season and she would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
