WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Softball team (11-7) defeated Somerville by a score of 5-1 on Thursday, May 24 in Somerville.
Hits were hard to come by for both teams, but the Wildcats played “old school softball” by getting their first batter on and using sacrifice bunts or flies to muster single runs in the first and fifth innings.
In the first, lead-off batter Kayla Bourrell got on base as a result of a hit batsman. Dana Goulet laid down a great sacrifice bunt allowing Bourrel to go all the way to third. Antonia Kieran hit another deep fly ball to right for a sacrifice fly scoring Bourrell.
In the fifth inning, Ryan Bailey started it off with a nice at bat ending in a walk. Gianna Brunetto sacrificed Bailey over to third. Bailey would then score on an Emily Wright single.
Liz Gordon got an RBI single in the sixth, plating Jenna Sweeney who came in as a courtesy runner for pitcher Ally Moran. In the bottom of the inning, Somerville scored its only run on an infield hi , stolen base and single.
Wildcats finished the scoring off in the seventh via a two-run homerun by shortstop Dana Goulet.
Pitcher Ally Moran once again picked up a win while recording double digit strikeouts (11).
