SELECTMEN NEWS: 5 Law Firms In The Running To Become Wilmington’s Next Town Counsel; Interviews Scheduled

WILMINGTON, MA — In response to a Request For Proposal (RFP) for Town Counsel services, the Wilmington Board of Selectmen recently received proposals from the following six firms:

The town formed a Screening Committee to hold initial interviews with the interested firms. The Committee consisted of Town Manager Jeff Hull, Assistant Town Manager Denise Casey, Police Chief Michael Begonis, Planning Director Valerie Gingrich, Public Buildings Director George Hooper, Principal Assessor Karen Rassias, and DPW Director Mike Woods.

According to Town Manager Jeff Hull, Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C. “did not appear to possess the level of experience dealing with the myriad of legal issues confronted by most municipalities to meet the requirements of the RFP” and were not considered.

The remaining five firms were interviewed on April 18 and April 19. Screening committee members provided Selectmen with commentary about each firm’s strengths and potential weaknesses, plus areas in which the Board should seek additional information.

“The Selectmen would be well served to interview all five firms,” concluded Hull.

Selectmen will interview two firms on Wednesday, June 6 and three firms on Tuesday, June 12 in Town Hall’s Room 9. The first interview each night will begin at 6pm. The interviews will be open to the public.

In March, Wilmington’s Town Counsel firm, Deutsch Williams, dissolved into two separate firms. Selectmen unanimously signed an agreement with one of the newly-formed firms, Brooks & DeRensis, PC, to serve as interim Town Counsel through June 30, 2018, while the town searches for permanent counsel.
