WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Firefighter Robert Varey was recently praised by the Board of Selectmen for rendering aid to an injured woman while off-duty.
Leading up to their May 14 meeting, Selectmen received an email from a woman who lives out-of-town. It read:
On April 16th of this year, I found myself the victim of a motor vehicle accident in which I was struck while standing in a crosswalk.
While laying injured on the ground, I was approached by (what I would later find out to be) a Wilmington firefighter who immediately asked if I was alright and conducted a trauma assessment to ensure I did not have a head or neck injury before I was taken to the hospital via ambulance.
Mr. Robert Varey proved himself an exemplary model of a public servant and a firefighter that Wilmington should be proud of. If he is one example of the men and women that are employed on your Fire Department, you must have one hell of a team!
I am eternally grateful for his assistance that evening and would like to share my gratitude with you.
“It goes to show you that [Wilmington’s public safety officials] go above and beyond, even when they’re not on duty,” said Selectman Greg Bendel, who publicly thanked Varey at the board’s recent meeting. Bendel’s comments were echoed by his colleagues.
