WILMINGTON, MA — Below are two recent Wilmington Little League game summaries:
Single A: Royals vs. Astros on Tuesday, May 8 at Glen Road Field
The Royals’ Evan McLean made his pitching debut throwing one inning and striking out two players. Ryan Fitzgerald caught two innings and capped off the final Inning of the game with a great hit to right field! Jackson Gardner hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield that he was able to beat out after a good play by the Astros. The Astros were led by a strong catching debut by Sam Beaudoin. He handled first time pitchers Masen Voner and Dante Capozzi. Both had strong pitching performances and had no problem finding the strike zone. The Astros offense got going by the big hitting Joe Mytych. Nicholas Maninos had a big two out two strike bases loaded hit to drive in a key run . Game balls were awarded to Sam Beaudoin and Masen Voner for their sportsmanship and play.
AAA: Astros survive Pirates’s comeback, 8-7, on Wednesday, May 9 at Boutwell Field
The Astros got off to a fast start as Evan Cummings lead off the game with a single. Ethan Afthim kept up his hot hitting by singling him in and then Tim Watson singled in Afthim. John Roofe also singled and Joe Gronemeyer singled and doubled. Others such as Jake Cronin, Kevin Pruslin, Will Poyant and Luke Kitanov reached base as well. Pruslin and Roofe scored twice while Cronin and Poyant came across once each. Poyant was dominant on the mound striking out NINE in three innings. Watson struck out five in two innings and Joe Cavanaugh added one in his inning. Joe Fennelly and Kitanov did their usual outstanding job behind the plate. Ronnan Scafiddi, Gronemeyer, Cavanaugh, Pruslin, and Afthim were among those making key plays in the field. Every one of those plays were needed as the Pirates came storming back in the last inning. Christopher Smith and Ronnie Jordan pitched well in their first stints. Joey Fallis and Maxwell Bagtaz kept the Pirates in the game early with some great fielding and everyone chipped in offensively to almost complete the come back from 6 runs down.
