WHS BASEBALL: Danny Gracia No-Hits Watertown As Wildcats Cruise To A 11-0 Victory

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Baseball team (3-4) defeated Watertown by a score of 11-0 on Tuesday, May 1.

Senior captain right hander Dan Gracia pitched a no hitter with 9 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 1 runner reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Gracia needed 101 pitches for the complete game. He retired the first 9 batters he faced in order before letting up a lead off walk in the 4th. He finished the game by retiring the last 11 batters he faced.

“The story of the night was Danny,” said Coach Aldo Caira. “He mixed his fast ball and breaking pitches in so well and for strikes. He threw first pitch strikes and seemed to get stronger as the game moved along. And that proved true as he struck out 6 of the last 11 batters he faced. Just a dominant performance, not much you can say beyond that. Danny is probably the best 1-2 pitcher in the state. He has an era of 0.00 and has only let up 4 hits over 20 innings.”

“They always say that it takes one great play for a pitcher to pitch a no hitter and tonight was no exception,” continued Caira. “The first batter in the bottom of the seventh ground a ball right back up the middle. Gracia instinctively reached for it with his bare hand and tipped it slowing the ball down. Chris Grecco came hard from his shortstop position and in one motion barehanded the ball and threw on the run to first base to get the runner by a half step. Truly and amazing play, something we have come to expect from Chris over thte past three years.”

The Wildcats had 7 days in between games to try and straighten out the course of the season after a 2-4 start. Wilmington broke out for 13 hits lead by Gracia (3 for 4, 1 run, 2 RBI). Carl Beatrice also went 3 for 4 with 1 run and 2 RBI. Both Graham Smith (1 run, 1 RBI) and Tommy Worob (2 runs, 1 RBI) went 2 for 4. Chris Stokes, Tim Kippenburger and Chris Grecco rounded out the attack with a hit each. Kippenburger and Stokes each had an RBI, while Grecco scored 2 runs.
