WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a recent Wilmington Little League game summary:
AAA: Braves defeat Astros, 11-9, on Sunday, April 22 at Boutwell Field
The Braves came to play in their first game of the season battling a tough Astros team into the darkness.
Solid pitching by starter Jake Banda and reliever Derek Perrault kept the team in the game until the bats came alive in the late innings.
Timely hitting from top to bottom, where everyone contributed, resulted in a true team effort in this early season classic.
For the Astros, Tim Watson had two hits out of the leadoff spot and Luke Kitanov mashed a booming triple to deep center field. Ronnan Scafiddi & Joe Gronemeyer added hits in a busy second inning. Others, including John Roofe, Kevin Pruslin, Joe Fennelly, Evan Cummings, Jake Cronin, and Ethan Afthim helped the Astros keep the bases busy all game long.
Three Joes (Gronemeyer, Cavanaugh, and Fennelly) pitched very well, combining for nine strikeouts and keeping the Braves off balance throughout the game.
Kitanov & Fennelly played great behind the plate, nabbing several runners at home.
Gronemeyer and Will Poyant owned the 4th inning on defense and there was some outstanding glove work, throws, and alert positioning out in the field from Kyle McDonald, Fennelly, Cummings, and Roofe among many others.
