WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Softball team (2-1) picked up its second win of the season, defeating Reading by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday, April 18 at Town Park.
Pitcher Ally Moran went the distance and allowed just three hits in the contest.
The first inning was an exciting and interesting one for both teams. After the first Reading batter flew out to left, the next two batters reached on walks. The second walk was disputed because the batter should have been called out on strikes, but the umpire lost track of the count thereby forcing an extra pitch and consequently a walk. The Wildcats dug deep and got out of the jam unscathed.
In the bottom of the first, Dana Goulet led off with a single. Two batters later, the bases were full with no outs. The Wildcats squeaked by two runs on an RBI single by Adele Burton (2-3 and robbed of a hit), plating Dana Goulet and Kayla Bourrell scoring on a pass ball.
In the sixth inning, Ally Moran’s no hitter was broken up with a lead off single. Reading had runners on first and second with no outs and the heart of the order coming up to bat. Wilmington was able to induce two infield popups as well as an unassisted put out by Antonia Kieran.
Wilmington got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan Bailey had a sacrifice fly scoring Jenna Sweeney who came in to run for Ally Moran (single).
Reading got its only run in the top of the seventh inning.
