Town To Build Temporary Outdoor Ice Rink At Rotary Park Next Winter

WILMINGTON, MA — The town will be building a temporary outdoor ice rink for residents to enjoy next winter.

The Town Manager and Department Heads from Engineering, Planning, Public Works, and Recreation recently met to discuss the feasibility of constructing a temporary outdoor ice rink.

The open field at Rotary Park was identified as the best site due to its central location, proximity to the Public Safety Building, and ability to possibly install temporary lighting.

The Recreation Department has agreed to fund the project, estimated to cost $20,000.

The use of the rink will be free to all.

“Former Selectwoman Judy O’Connell and Selectman Kevin Caira brought the temporary ice rink idea to the table, DPW agreed to do all the work, and the Recreation Department agreed to finance the project,” explained Recreation Director Karen Campbell.

“We are looking for the rink to go up during the 2018/2019 winter,” continued Campbell. “When that exactly starts is anyone’s guess — it will be completely dependent on whenever a prolonged cold spell starts and when DPW’s schedule permits.”

More details on the ice rink will be announced prior to its installation.
