Winners Announced In 2nd Annual Taste of Towns Pizza War

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington House of Pizza and LaRosa’s Restaurant were the big winners at Monday’s night’s 2nd Annual Pizza War held to raise money for the fight against cancer. Almost 200 people joined in the fun to sample and then to vote on their favorite pizza. The event was sponsored by the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Wilmington-Billerica-Tewksbury. Eleven restaurants competed.

Other Wilmington entries were Greg’s Pizza, Nick’s Pizza, Pizza Mia & Uptown Deli, Rizzo’s, Rocco’s, Sweet Pizza, and EJ’s Fresh Frozen Pizza. Tewksbury was represented by Anthony’s Roast Beef, and Suppa’s Pizza from Billerica brought their home town favorites.

Wilmington House of Pizza was awarded “Best Cheese Pizza” and LaRosa’s fell in next as runner up. Wilmington House of Pizza also won “Best Specialty Pizza” with their Cheeseburger and Fries entry. A very close second LaRosa’s with their Chicken Broccoli Alfredo.

This is the second year Wilmington House of Pizza won the contest. Heidi Jelev, co-owner Wilmington House of Pizza, was excited and flattered to triumph again. She and Operations Manager Tierney McCue served the pizza. They also brought desserts. Wilmington House of Pizza is a Main Street business that has been a part of the community for 39 years.

LaRosa’s chef-owner Jason Evans was also extremely happy to be at this community event and to support the fight against cancer. Evans featured several specialty pizzas in addition to his winning Chicken Broccoli Alfredo. He served an eggplant-sausage-ricotta pizza and a veggie pizza as well. “It’s been great; I’m happy,” he said even before the winners were announced. “I love sharing my food with people.”

Another strong contender was Suppa’s unique Big Mac Pizza. “It went quick,” said Karen Grabowski, Relay committee Member. “As soon as people heard the name and saw how good it looked, they wanted some.” Suppa’s has been recognized as one of Phantom Gourmet’s hidden gems.

The event raised $1,000 and kicked off the Relay for Life season. Relay is an overnight family fun-filled experience. There’s music, entertainment, games, food and more as the community joins together to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer.
