OBITUARY: James F. Banda, 96

WILMINGTOn, MA — Attorney James F. Banda, age 96, of Wilmington, January 26, 2018.

Mr. Banda was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Gladys H. (Conrad), and their young daughter, Marianne F., who died of childhood leukemia. He is survived by five children: Michael J. and his wife, Diane, of San Francisco, CA; James F. Jr., and his wife, Patricia, of Marshfield; Mark L. of Port Hueneme, CA; Deborah E. of Andover; and Eric J. of Wilmington. Mr. Banda is also survived by four grandchildren: Eric Jr., Corey, Sasha and Beatrice; and four great-grandchildren: Eric, Jake, Cameron and Shae.

Mr. Banda was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for combat service in World War Two as a member of the U.S. Army Second Armored Division. He met his late wife, then 1st Lt. Gladys Conrad of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, while recuperating from significant wounds suffered in battle in Germany in 1944.

Mr. Banda received his J.D. from Suffolk Law School and was a member of the Massachusetts Bar. A resident of Wilmington for 59 years, where he maintained his law practice, Mr. Banda was the former Veterans Agent for the Town of Wilmington. He also served on the Wilmington Board of Selectmen, the Wilmington Planning Board, was a long time trustee of the Wilmington Memorial Library, and co-founder of Wilmington Family Counseling Service.

Mr. Banda was the son of the late John and Delfina Banda, of Somerville, both natives of the Azores. He was also predeceased by all of his siblings: Frank; Joe, who was killed in action in World War Two; John; and his twin brother, Albert.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Thursday, February 1st at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 31st from4:00-8:00 p.m.

  1. Attorney Banda was my very first lawyer who handled my house closing when I first moved to Wilmington. He will be missed.
