Deputy Fire Chief Gary Donovan Appointed Acting Fire Chief; Town To Name Permanent Chief In 4-6 Weeks

WILMINGTON, MA — At Monday’s Selectmen’s Meeting, Town Manager Jeff Hull announced that Deputy Fire Chief Gary Donovan has been appointed Acting Fire Chief, on an interim basis, after Fire Chief Rick McClellan retired earlier this month.  Donovan, himself, is expected to retire this summer.

According to Hull, a permanent fire chief will be selected in the next 4-6 weeks.

“The Fire Chief’s position is a civil service position,” explained Hull.  “[Candidates] went through an assessment center that was conducted in early December. This past week, [the town] received each candidate’s scores.”

“Now the top 3 candidates will go through an interview process coordinated by Assistant Town Manager and HR Director Dee Casey,” continued Hull. “Some Department Heads will participate in that interview process and offer comment to me.  I will then meet with the candidates and make a selection.”

Hull did not divulge the name of the three finalists vying for the Fire Chief position. Based on a discussion at a previous Selectmen’s Meeting concerning civil service requirements and assessment center processes, it’s believed all three candidates are current Wilmington firefighters.
