WORCESTER, MA — The Assumption College Office of Student Activities has announced that Jacqueline Ryan, of Wilminton, has been elected, and is currently serving, as Vice President of Greenhounds for the 2017-18 academic year.
Greenhounds is one of nearly 60 clubs and organizations available to students allowing them the opportunity to network with professionals; take on leadership roles; and use classroom knowledge in the community. The student-run clubs appeal to a variety of interests and include offerings such as academic clubs (French, Italian, Pre-law, etc.); media (College television station, literary magazine and student newspaper, Le Provocateur); honor societies and many more.
“Student involvement is a cornerstone of an Assumption education,” said Kaitlin Bevins, director of student activities and leadership development at Assumption. “The College offers a wide array of clubs and organizations-cultural, athletic, and academic, among others. Engagement in student groups help students find their niche and utilize their talents, while building confidence, friendships and leadership skills.”
Assumption College Green Hounds work to promote sustainable practices at both the individual level and throughout the campus community. They work in collaboration with the College’s Sustainability Committee to make events more sustainable, educate their peers about environmental stewardship, and engage the campus community in making positive changes. Throughout the school year, Green Hounds initiate and lead events such as Weigh Your Food Waste, Waste Audits, Recyclemania, Carbon Fasts and Fair Trade awareness.
Assumption College boasts an outstanding academic curriculum as well as a campus rich with student activity. This fall, The Princeton Review included Assumption in its Best 382 Colleges in the nation, in which students highlighted “a great sense of belonging” on campus. Students also lauded the College for engaging and encouraging students to get involved on campus, and making it “easy to meet new people.”
Based on a study conducted by USA Today, student success in both the classroom and the professional environment are directly linked to student involvement. Students involved in extracurricular activities consistently outperformed students who were uninvolved. Overall, student involvement correlated with higher grade point averages, more social engagement and more potential job opportunities compared to those who did not participate in student leadership organizations.
