WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a round-up of what’s going on in Wilmington on Saturday, December 2, 2017:
Weather: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Calm wind.
Traffic Advisory: Butters Row Bridge will be closed through at least December 13. The MassDOT are repairing damaged bridge timber deck planks and timber stringers. Work will take place daily from 7am to 7pm. Detour routes are posted HERE.
Yardwaste: The Town’s Recycling Center (Old Main Street) is open from 9am to 4pm for leaf and brush drop-off. [Read more HERE.]
In The Community: We’re One Wilmington (WOW) is holding its 7th Annual Festival of Trees on Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 9am to 9am and Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 9am to 3pm at Villanova Hall (126 Middlesex Avenue). This free family-friendly event will feature a raffle of spectacular holiday trees, wreaths and baskets. There will also be baked goods, popcorn and refreshments for sale, as well as musical performances, a scavenger hunt and a special visit by Mrs. Claus. The event will include the Annual Angel Giving Tree tagged with holiday gift requests for community members in need. The entertainment and non-profit schedules can be found HERE.
In The Community: The Town of Wilmington’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 2, 2017. The fun begins at 4pm, with the official ceremony beginning at 5:30pm.
This annual popular event, sponsored by the Wilmington Fourth of July Committee, will feature the following:
- Kiddie rides from Cushing Amusements, which begin at 4pm and end at 7pm (NEW THIS YEAR)
- Horse-drawn hayrides, which begin at 4:30pm and end at 6:15pm
- An ice sculpture sponsored by the Wilmington/Tewksbury Chamber of Commerce (Chamber member donors: Align Credit Union, CareOne at Wilmington, Enterprise Bank, Heller Eyecare, K1 Speed, Lowell Five Bank, Mark Kratman, Pearle Vision, Reading Cooperative Bank, RTN Federal Credit Union, The Self Defense Institute, Winbrook, Woodbriar Health Center)
- Wilmington Minutemen with lanterns
- A cappela group performance from WHS Soundscape
- Free cookies and hot chocolate
- Wilmington Fire Department’s Toys for Wilmington Children Drive (Bring your new unwrapped toys to the Fourth of July Building)
- Wilmington Community Fund’s annual Holiday Ornament sale
- After the ceremony, Santa Claus will be available for photos in the Fourth of July Building. (Photos will be downloaded from the Fun on the Fourth Committee’s website, but parents are also encouraged to bring their own cameras.)
In The Community: Residents of Deming Way will hold their annual Christmas Craft Fair from 9am to 2pm at Deming Way (41 Deming Way). The fair offers handcrafted gifts for sale, with a “white elephant” table. Baked goods (cookies, cakes and pies) will also be available for purchase. In addition, select prized items are raffled off each year, from unique handcrafted items to gift certificates donated by stores and eateries. The raffle selection begins at the end of the fair.
In The Community: Rumor has it that Mrs. Claus will be making a stop at the Wilmington United Methodist Christmas Tree stand TODAY (December 2) from 9am to 10:30am. Come down and buy your Christmas tree! If you can’t make it when Mrs. Claus visits, you can always come another time. Trees are for sale on Thursdays and Fridays 4pm to 8pm, Saturdays 10am to 8pm, and Sundays 10am to 6pm. All proceeds from the tree sales support the many programs that the WUMC Outreach Committee supports.
In The Community: 6th, 7th and 8th grade students living in Wilmington are invited to join the Wilmington Youth Center and enjoy being part of a community that offers a safe place to hang out with your friends and have fun! The Wilmington Youth Center, located inside Villanova Hall (126 Middlesex Avenue), will be open every Saturday night, from 7pm to 9:30pm, from November 25, 2017 to March 17, 2018. Registration costs $40 per child or $80 per family. Registrations will be accepted on Saturday nights during the season. Learn more HERE.
In The Community: The Friends of the Wilmington Memorial Library’s Book Store Next Door (183 Middlesex Avenue) is open from 10am to 4pm. All books are $2 or less! Every penny of every sale benefits the Wilmington Memorial Library. Learn more HERE. Also, the store is holding a special Holiday Open House TODAY from 4pm to 7pm. Enjoy warm cider and cookies while you shop for holiday book gifts. All holiday books and movies are 50% off!
