SCHOOL COMMITTEE NOTEBOOK: Student Enrollment Down Slightly From Last Year

WILMINGTON, MA — The School Committee recently received an enrollment report from Interim Superintendent Paul Ruggiero.

The district’s enrollment is down 44 students from last year, falling from 3,463 to 3,419.

  • Boutwell INCREASED by 2, from 158 to 160
  • Wildwood INCREASED by 16, from 179 to 195
  • Shawsheen DECREASED by 14, from 359 to 345
  • Woburn Street DECREASED by 29, from 412 to 383
  • North INCREASED by 33, from 270 to 303
  • West DECREASED by 7, from 254 to 247
  • Middle School DECREASED by 31, from 869 to 838
  • High School DECREASED by 23, from 892 to 869
  • Out of District Placement INCREASED by 9, from 70 to 79

The district has submitted its enrollment numbers to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and is now working through the state’s verification process.

“Our Office of Information Technology — Dana Burnham and Trish Volpe — do a tremendous amount of work with the DESE getting these numbers finalized.  It’s quite a process.” said Ruggiero. “The state works with each district to make sure that each student is counted only once.”

Ruggiero believes the district’s current enrollment numbers will remain virtually unchanged during the verification process and remain steady during the school year.

“I don’t envision our enrollment number changing much,” said Ruggiero in response to a question from School Committee member MJ Byrnes. “I know some districts have seen an influx of students from, for example, Puerto Rico with the hurricane.  We have not seen anything like there here, but some surrounding districts have seen students coming over.”

The School Committee will receive an update on the enrollment numbers once the verification process is completed, possibly as early as December.
