WILMINGTON, MA — The Town of Wilmington dedicated to the WHS Gymnasium in honor of Larry Cushing last Saturday, October 28 in a ceremony organized by the Wildcat Athletic Alumni and Friends Association.
“It’s kind of unusual that you get to see something like this in a lifetime — once with the old gym and now with the new gym,” Jack Cushing told the large crowd who came to pay tribute to a Wilmington legend. “He was a person who was well deserving of it all.”
“It’s nice that I got to live in the same house as my idol,” noted Cushing. “I got follow in his footsteps with the town’s recreation programs.”
Cushing thanked voters at this year’s Annual Town Meeting for unanimously approving the naming of the gymnasium, and thanked Town Manager Jeff Hull, the Selectmen, and the School Committee for their support during that process.
Hull, Board of Selectmen Chair Mike Champoux, Interim School Superintendent Paul Ruggiero, School Committee Chair Steve Bjork, and State Rep. Jim Miceli’s legislative aide Dave Robertson all shared some words.
Several of Wilmington High’s all-time standout athletes were in attendance, as were many members of the Cushing family and former athletic directors and coaches.
Former Town Moderator Jim Stewart emceed the event and honored Cushing by sharing some of his personal and professional achievements, as well as stories from a few of the many students he had a long-lasting effect on.
Elementary and high school students demonstrated several of Cushing’s favorite phys ed and recreational activities. Photos, memorabilia, and newspaper clippings related to Cushing were also on display at the event.
