SCHOOL COMMITTEE NOTEBOOK: WHS Senior Aditya Gautham Receives Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Interim School Superintendent Paul Ruggiero presented WHS senior Aditya Gautham with the 2017-2018 Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award at a recent School Committee Meeting.

“Aditya Gautham is an outstanding and articulate student who takes on the most demanding course schedule WHS has to offer each year,” announced Ruggiero. “Aditya is a member of the National Honor Society and last spring, he was named WHS honoree of the Middlesex League High School SLIS Award in recognition of students who most represent the following characteristics: Scholarship, Integrity, Leadership, and Spirit.”

“Aditya’s desire for knowledge and real-world experience goes beyond the classroom,” continued Ruggiero. “He has sought various opportunities including, but not limited to, job shadowing opportunities with an oncologist and participating in specialized enrichment programs over the past two summers. Being able to explore the world of pre-medical studies at Tufts University and be immersed in work within a laboratory at Boston University have further depend his interests in the life sciences.”

Ruggiero also noted that Gautham is very involved in extracurricular activities, including winter and spring track; Model U.N.; founding the popular WHS Ping Pong Club; and serving as the volleyball team’s videographer.

“You’re going to have to wear shades because your future is so bright,” School Committee Chair Steve Bjork told Gautham.

The Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award, sponsored by the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, is given annually to a WHS student who has distinguished themselves in the pursuit of excellence during their high school careers.

Selection is based upon three factors: (1) three year cumulative GPA; (2) class rank; and (3) the personal selection by the Superintendent. The Superintendent is given leeway among the class’s top 5% for her selection.
