LETTER TO THE EDITOR: McCoy Comes Out AGAINST Global Proposal

Dear Editor,

At the recent meeting of the Wilmington Board of Selectmen on September 11, 2017, I announced under New Business that I am not a “Johnny come lately”.  I announced that I will join the residents of this town in opposing Global to open for business on West Street.  Unfortunately at the first hearing I could not attend because of personal reasons.  At the second hearing dated September 5, 2017, the meeting was postponed by the proponents of Global and was cancelled at the last minute.  I planned on attending that second hearing.  Over the past 40 days I have touched base with some of the residents that attended those meetings and live in the area.  I will be there to fight tooth and nail against Global.

If you don’t like what you see, speak up.  You need community involvement to get things done.  Your silence means you are satisfied with what’s happening in your community.  Potential development over the next few years will determine the future of our town.   Do you still want to keep Wilmington and its small town feel or do you want to change the face of Wilmington and turn it into a city?  We are on a fast track to do that but what has potential to be implemented is mass zoning changes in our town.  Some members on the Board of Selectmen and certain department heads are looking to increase the density that was established at recent town meetings for number of units per acre which was generous and it’s still not good enough.  They want more.  I want less.

I served as a member on the Planning Board from 1984-1987.  When I ran for selectman in 1987 I stated that I don’t want to turn our community into another Everett or Revere.  Now 30 years later in 2017, I don’t want to turn this community into another Burlington or Billerica and I know many of you feel the same way I do.

Sincerely,
Wilmington Selectman Michael McCoy
