READING, MA — This summer, Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) held its first ever electricity themed summer art contest for high school students from Reading, North Reading, Wilmington, and areas of Lynnfield served by RMLD. RMLD honored participating students at an awards ceremony held on August 24th at RMLD’s office in Reading. Awards were presented by Coleen O’Brien, RMLD’s General Manager, and Tom O’Rourke, a member of RMLD’s Board of Commissioners.
Students were asked to focus their artwork on specific topics related to electricity and public power including: conservation during peak demand times (Shred the Peak); electrical safety; community solar (Solar Choice); and public power within the community. A first, second, third, and fourth place winner were selected based on the creativity of the artwork and the message that was portrayed.
The following students were recognized at the awards ceremony:
- 1st Place – Laura Buscemi, Grade 10, North Reading High School
- 2nd Place – Megan Coram, Grade 11, Reading Memorial High School
- 3rd Place – Sophia Bonaccorsi, Grade 11, Wilmington High School
- 4th Place – Patrick Aucella, Grade 9, Reading Memorial High School
All other participants were given an honorable mention to thank them for their creativity and for submitting their original artwork to RMLD.
Each participating student received a certificate for four hours of community service for taking part in the contest. The first-place winner was awarded a $100 Staples gift card, and their artwork will be featured on the cover of RMLD’s upcoming Annual Report; the second-place winner was awarded a $75 Staples gift card; the third-place winner was awarded a $50 Staples gift card; and the fourth-place winner was awarded a $25 Staples gift card.
