WILMINGTON, MA — Zachary R. Mayo, “Zack”, age 29, a life-long resident of Wilmington, passed away unexpectedly on August 21, 2017.
Zack was born on January 9, 1988, in Boston, MA. He was the cherished son of Bob and Deb Mayo. Zack along with his brothers Joe and Josh were raised in a very loving and tight-knit family. Zack was a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 2006. Zack was known to be quite an athlete growing up, especially in Football and Basketball. He was a force to be reckoned with for the Wilmington Wildcat High School Football team, where Zack was captain of the Wildcats during his senior year and was selected by the Lowell Sun Newspaper to their All-Star Football Team.
Zack went on to attend college following High School but his passion was to serve his country and on January 7, 2009 he enlisted in the United States Navy. Zack was a Navy Corpsman and Combat Veteran with the Marine Corps. In January of 2012, Zack was deployed overseas to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he was assigned to fight in Helmand Province, one of the most dangerous posts in Afghanistan. Zack received many commendations for his bravery including the Combat Action Ribbon, First Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, NATO Medal, and the Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon. He was discharged in 2013 and returned home to his family.
Zack enjoyed going to the movies and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Patriots. He was thrilled when surprised and honored by Coach Belichick at a veteran’s gala in 2015.
Zack will be fondly remembered for his love of family. Zack enjoyed the holidays, vacations on Cape Cod, being with his brothers and was very proud of becoming a Godfather to his nephew Benjamin. Zack was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, who will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Zack was the beloved son of Robert M. and Deborah A. (Iovine) Mayo of Wilmington, dear brother of Joseph Mayo & his wife Diana of Windham, ME and Joshua Mayo & his fiancé Arianna Kaplan of Medford, loving uncle and Godfather of Benjamin Edward Mayo, and grandson of Florence Iovine of Medford. Zachary is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
At the family’s request, all Funeral Services for Zack will be private.
In lieu of flowers donations in Zachary’s memory may be made to Save A Warrior, Malibu CA (saveawarrior.org). Zack was a graduate of the program.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington.
