LIBRARY LINEUP: Painting With Acrylics Workshop On July 18; After Hours Comedy Night On July 21

WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a list of FREE upcoming programs for adults, teens and kids at the Wilmington Memorial Library.

Adult Events

Painting with Acrylics Workshop*RR
Tuesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 20, 10 am-12 pm
New to working with acrylic paint or looking for a refresher course? This two-day workshop will provide an overview of working with acrylics while painting from direct observation. In addition to covering the techniques specific to acrylic paints, instruction will be provided on developing a strong composition, considering color theory, and establishing a personal style or aesthetic. All levels are welcome. Led by WHS Visual Arts teacher Jen Fidler. There is $10 supply fee. Please register at the main desk.

Jazzin’ the Blues *RR
Thursday, July 20, 2:30 pm
Enjoy both a concert and an historical experience with Blues and Jazz guitarist Paul Speidel as he takes listeners through the music from the 20th century to the present with examples of the Blues origins in Jazz, Latin, Soul and a little Rock-n-Roll.  Paul has performed at major clubs and festivals in the Greater Boston area.  This program is sponsored in part by a grant from the Wilmington Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Novel Ideas Fiction Book Group*RR

Featured Book: The Dry by Jane Harper
The library’s fiction book group led by Adult Services Librarian Kim Rowley will discuss The Dry by Jane Harper.  Come at 6:30 pm to get some tips on good reads from  Eileen MacDougall, reader extraordinaire.

After Hours Comedy Night *RR
Friday, July 21, 7 pm

Enjoy an evening of clean comedy and refreshment with Wilmington’s own Steve Bjork, who the Boston Globe called one of the biggest names in Boston comedy. Comedian Dave Rattigan will join Steve for the library’s first After Hours Comedy Night.  Dave is “known for deadpan delivery and quick, dry wit, Rattigan is a favorite at clubs, corporate shows, colleges, theaters and fundraising shows in Boston and throughout New England.” Ticket price of $15 includes a beer (a selection of summer beers will be available) and snacks.  Steve will sell and sign copies of his book, Almost Domesticated, at the event. This event is limited to age 21+.

Tips for Resumes and Interviews *RR
Monday, July 24, 10 am
Artie Lynnworth, retired business executive and author of four books including Slice the Salam–Tips for Life and Leadership One Slice at a Time plus Tips for Résumés and Interviews, All in One Hour, will address how to ace an interview and create an effective resume. He will share a successful process for at-home preparation, including STAR communication techniques, with the goal of having you achieve the job you want.

Come listen to books about underwater creatures and make a fun craft. Space is limited.  Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Ages 3-6

Family Movie: Lego Batman Movie *RR

A cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick. Enjoy freshly popped popcorn. Please note that children under 10 must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Want to cool off in the library air conditioning while eating frozen treats and listening to stories? Then this read-aloud book club is for you! Join us as we read Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard Atwater in this five-week series. For our final meeting we will watch the movie together. Each child will receive a complimentary copy of the book. Grades 1-3

Build a Better World with Greg and Axel *RR

This program features magic, comedy, audience participation and Axel the dog! Join us to discover all the wonders that await when you open a book and read, and find out how becoming a great reader can help build a better world!  Ages 4+

Baby Times

Build a Better . . . Structure

Drop in for a different building challenge each week.  This week we will have lots of different materials available for building a structure.  Ages 3+
