WILMINGTON, MA — On Thursday, June 15, Cops for Kids with Cancer held an event at the Shawsheen Elementary School in recognition of Brodie Rawson, a Wilmington third grader recovering from Burkitt Lymphoma.
Brodie, who was diagnosed with the cancer in May 2016 and underwent six rounds of in-patient chemotherapy, missed an extended period of school. To assure he would be able to complete second grade on time, his teacher — Sharon Gallo Dunn — tutored Brodie. Astonishingly, Dunn, herself, was out on medical leave at the time. She, too, was battling cancer, but still made time to volunteer with Brodie.
“She is truly the most kind and giving teacher I’ve ever met,” wrote Principal Lisa King of Gallo Dunn, who has been a second grade teacher in town for more than 20 years.
Colleagues described Gallo Dunn’s kindness and generosity as “unmatched,” and noted her infectious laughter can be heard throughout the building.
“Whenever someone is in need, Mrs. Gallo Dunn is there with a smile, a hug and a way to help,” said one colleague. “When she heard that she had cancer, she never let it change her… Mrs. Gallo Dunn was not letting cancer beat her, and there was no way she was going to let it beat one of her students.”
Wilmington Police Chief Michael Begonis and Cops for Kids with Cancer representative Ed McNelly presented Brodie and his mom Erika with a check for $5,000.
Brodie Rawson is the fourth Wilmington child that has been recognized by the Cops for Kids with Cancer.
Since 2004, Cops for Kids with Cancer has given more than $2.5 million to families. Each month, the organization gives $5,000 to six different families who have a child stricken with cancer. There is no strings attached to the donation — the family can spend the monies as they deem fit.
