What To Expect At This Year’s Wilmington Relay For Life On June 16-17

WILMINGTON, MA — Teams are anxious to go and the agenda is set for the Relay For Life of Wilmington-Billerica. The American Cancer Society sponsored event is not a race or athletic event, but the same energy and spirit of dedication is there as teams prepare for the overnight gathering and celebration.

The Relay for Life will begin on Friday, June 16 at 4pm at the Wilmington High School. It’s a family-fun night of food, entertainment, and activities. Teams of people camp out. Each team has a representative walking laps at all times during the event because cancer never sleeps. That’s the core of the relay idea.

Relay For Life activities include games and fun for all ages. There will be a scavenger hunt, a hula hoop contest, a ladder ball tournament, corn hole and even a chance to Trick or Treat for candy. The children’s Fun Zone has a bouncy house, face painting, bubble machines, and more. Entertainment includes a dance performance, DJ provided music, and a comedy show. Among the food choices is the Turkey Hill Ice Cream Truck. Boston Radio Mix 104.1 will also be on hand.

Music, costumes and decorations set the mood. The formal opening ceremony is at 6 PM. After opening remarks, a special ceremony honors cancer survivors. It is followed by the traditional survivor dinner. Several other ceremonies take place as well.

This year’s luminaria ceremony is scheduled for 9pm. For this, small white bags are decorated either by the person donating or by volunteers. Candles are set inside each one and then during the Relay event, they are lit in honor or memory to loved ones. The lighting ceremony sends a message of hope and remembrance. It is often described as the most meaningful part of the evening.

Relay is open to the public until 11pm so whether you have a team or just want to come for the festivities, please join the fun. For more information, check their Facebook page or email Eric Duffy, ACS Community Manager, at eric.duffy@cancer.org.
