WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Softball team defeated Woburn High, 5-4, on Saturday, May 27 at Town Park in the clash of two very good teams.
Woburn loaded the bases in the first inning, but were only able to push across one run. Wilmington tied the game in the third inning with a Liz Gordon walk, Ryan Bailey sacrifice bunt, Kayla Bourrell bunt single, and a Jen Dovidio RBI single.
Woburn would take the lead back in the fourth inning by scoring two runs, but Wilmington would respond with 2 runs of their own in their half of the inning. Antonia Kieran and Adele Burton both singled. Ally Morgan reached on a fielder’s choice after the Woburn pitcher picked off Kieran at third base. Liz Gordon then singled to load the bases. Ryan Bailey scored Burton on an RBI single. Burton was able to dislodge the ball from the catcher with a hard slide. Kayla Bourrell scored Aliyah Tang, courtesy running for Ally Moran, with a deep sacrifice fly.
Wilmington took their first lead, 4-3, of the game in the fifth inning. Dana Goulet reached on a single. She then moved to third base on a bunt and run by Shannon Horgan. Goulet would score on an Adele Burton RBI single. Woburn would quickly tie it up, 4-4.
The game remained tied until the ninth inning. With one out, Shannon Horgan roped a triple to centerfield. Adele Burton then got the walk-off hit to score Shannon and win the game, 5-4.
“The Wildcats did a great job today,” said Coach Audrey Cabral-Pini. “They were able to put the ball in play as well as executive some great sacrifice flies and bunts. They did not strike out all day.”
UP NEXT: The Wildcats (14-4) next play Everett High on Sunday, May 28 at 10am at Town Park.
