WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Softball team defeated Wakefield High with a walk-off, extra innings 4-3 win on Friday, May 12 at Town Park.
Wakefield struck first with a run in the second inning, but Wilmington rallied back by grabbing two runs in the third. Kayla Bourrell and Dana Goulet scored as a result of a walk singles by Shannon Horgan and Antonia Kieran. Wakefield took the lead in the fourth inning with two runs of their own. The damage could have been worse, however, but Jen Dovidio was able to throw out a runner trying to score on an infield hit. Wilmington got one back after an Ally Moran triple followed by a Ryan Bailey sacrifice bunt.
The Wildcats had scoring opportunities late in the game, leaving the bases load in the fifth and the seventh. Wakefield was also unable to capitalize on their own opportunities. In extra innings (8th inning), Liz Gordon led off with a single. She was sacrificed to second and third on bunts by Ryan Bailey and Kayla Bourrell. With two outs, Jen Dovidio knocked Gordon in for the Wildcat walk-off victory.
Earlier in the week, the Wildcats fell to Everett, 4-3, on Thursday, May 11 at Everett High.
“The Wildcats played a very disappointing game on all facets — at bat, running the bases, and defensively,” said Coach Audrey Cabral-Pini. “Overall, it was a lethargic effort.”
The Wildcats were successful against Melrose, 4-3, on Wednesday, May 10 at Town Park.
Melrose scored in the first inning on a homerun. Wilmington tied the game in the bottom of the first courtesy of a Jen Dovidio double and Dana Goulet RBI single. Wilmington took the lead in the second when Adele Burton’s infield single scored Dovidio.
Melrose took the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth inning, but Wilmington battled back and tied the game in the fifth inning when Dana Goulet singled, stole second, and was knocked in by an Antonia Kieran RBI double.
Melrose had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh inning. Pitcher Ally Moran was down in the count, 3 balls to 1 strike, but wound up striking out back-to-back batters. Wilmington then loaded the bases in the seventh, when Antonia Kieran was able to deliver a walk-off victory.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats (9-4) next play Stoneham High on Wednesday, May 17 at 6pm at Town Park.
