The Dance Company & 85 Local Dancers Featured In ‘One Family ‘ Documentary

WILMINGTON, MA — There was much enthusiasm and excitement at The Dance Company in Wilmington last Saturday afternoon.

Over 85 dancers spent several hours dancing for the cameras of Atlanta filmmakers, Matthew Young and Jared Young, who are making a new documentary film, “One Family.” The Dance Company was one of 30 dance studios around the nation, and the only one in Massachusetts, selected for this project.

The Dance Company dancers spent a half day filming on April 15th, performing a one-minute routine over and over again as cameras captured multiple angles. Dance Company dance instructors choreographed the number to accommodate a wide range of skill levels, finding the experience positive for both the beginning and advanced dancers.

The project is a follow up to several dance films that are part of the Untapped Movement. Matthew Young said his twin brother Jared created the movement nearly four years ago after they were inspired to make a movie about dance through their production company Brothers Young Productions. While originally designed to function as the movie’s marketing campaign, the project quickly grew into something on its own.

“We tapped into the emotional depth of the dance world and came to discover the emotions that go into the dancers, studios and studio owners, beyond just the dancing, but more of the family aspect,” said Matthew.

Filming the dance world was a natural fit for the brothers, specifically contemporary and lyrical dance that Young said was more emotional and story driven.

“Now, we say our motto is stories that encourage and inspire,” said Young.

The Dance Company owner and director Kathaleen Rooney-Gray said she is thrilled that her dancers got to be a part of this movie.

Parts of the film will be shown at a film festival in Chicago this summer, she said, but the release date has not been set.

The Dance Company senior dancer Mackenzie Barrall says, “One Family” highlights how a dance studio can come together and act as one big family. “It is really humbling,” she said.

Dancer Meghan O’Mahony, said “I think it is pretty amazing that we had the opportunity to do this,” she commented. “We were so excited when we found out what it is about.”

The filming of the movie came after a very successful competition season. The Dance Company Dancers brought home the overall Stellar Award.  Information on the Untapped project, visit
