WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Sons of Italy (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge) celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a gala on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Tewksbury/Wilmington Elks Lodge.
The Wilmington Sons of Italy had much to celebrate as it has donated more than $1.5 million since its inception. According to the organization’s website, local charitable initiatives have included:
- Annual scholarships to graduating Wilmington high school students
- Donations to Local Heroes, iPods for Wounded Veterans, Wilmington Memorial Library, Wilmington Recreation Department, Wilmington Community Fund and Food Pantry, Wilmington Athletic Alumni & Friends, Wilmington Band Parents, Wilmington Senior Citizens, Wilmington Kiwanis, Wilmington Fourth of July Committee, Wilmington Lions Club, Wilmington Rotary, Wilmington Knights of Columbus, Wilmington Minutemen, Wilmington Police and Fire Departments, Tewksbury Hospital, A.I.M., Aleppo Temple Charities, St. Thomas Women’s Club, the Catholic Community of Wilmington and South Tewksbury, Boy Scout Troop 126, and school PACs.
- Support to Wilmington youth and high school athletics, including electronic scoreboards for various WHS teams, equipment for the WHS baseball team; and uniforms purchased for all varsity WHS teams.
- $30,000-$50,000 in annual donations to the Town of Wilmington. The most recent purchase includes the pavilion at the new Yentile Farm Recreational Facility. Past purchases have included the ‘Welcome to Wilmington’ sign at the Town Common, new playgrounds at the North and Woburn Street, and a handicapped-accessible van and BINGO board for the Senior Center.
