WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Belmont High, 1-0, on Wednesday, April 19 at Scanlon Field.
This battle of undefeated teams featured a pitching duel between Belmont’s Joe Espelin and Wilmington’s Dan Gracia. Both pitched impressive games. Espelin recorded 19 strikeouts, while surrendering 4 hits and 1 walk. Gracia recorded 4 strikeouts, while surrendering 3 hits, 1 walk, and 1 earned run.
On a quiet day at the plate for both teams, Jared Aucoin led the way for the Wildcats with 2 hits. Tom Worob and Matt Rideout each chipped in with a hit of their own.
The Wildcats played stellar defense, turning a key double play and throwing a runner out trying to stretch a single into a double in the 6th inning. Also of note, catcher Rob Ducharme threw out a pinch runner attempting to steal in the 7th inning.
