WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Softball team opened its 2017 season with a 2-1 victory over Lexington High on Thursday, April 13 at Town Park.
Wilmington sophomore Ally Moran pitched a gem, recording 12 strikeouts while going the distance. Moran’s commanding performance included striking out the sides in the second and fifth innings. Moran hit a rough patch in the seventh inning, surrendering three walks, but she was able to escape the jam and surrender just one run.
Wilmington senior Shannon Horgan, team captain, got the Wildcats on the board with a 2-out solo home run to deep right field in the fifth inning. Wilmington’s Antonia Kieran would later single, advance to second on a pass ball and score thanks to an infield error and smart base running.
Wilmington had additional scoring opportunities throughout the game, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning, and two on in the fourth and sixth innings.
Wilmington played sound defense throughout the game.
