LETTER TO THE EDITOR: School Committee Candidate Amy Largenton Asks For Your Vote

Dear Wilmington Voters,

My name is Amy Largenton.  The reason I am running for School Committee is because I feel strongly that it is time for some new thoughts, new ideas, and for fresh energy to be brought to our board. Also I want to set an example for my  children that if you really want change to happen you need to be an active participant.

I graduated in 1998 from College with a Paralegal Studies degree. During my college years I did an internship with the Walt Disney World College program. There I learned the aspects on how to run a Fortune 500 company while receiving a business certificate. My enjoyment of the business field led me into management with Osco Drug and I continued working and growing with this company through their levels of management. My responsibilities included working with and training employees, working with budgets, and other human resources management. I am currently employed at a family owned business as an Administrative Assistant. My duties include accounts payable, receivables, budgets, invoicing and working with all our commercial accounts on processing.

My husband Jim is a master electrician who is an electrical instructor at Shawsheen Technical School and he currently has his own business, JF Largenton Electrical Contractors in Wilmington. Jim and his family have been residents of Wilmington since 1986.

Jim and I purchased our house here in Wilmington in 2007 based on the community and its’ wonderful school system. My son, Aidan age 9, is currently a third grader. Meghan, age 3, is in pre-k at Brookside Nursery School.

I have been actively involved in the schools as a volunteer and as a substitute teacher for the last two years. As a substitute I am able to see a teacher’s perspective along with a parent’s. I have served on the Wildwood PAC and The Student Advisory Council. At Woburn Street, I am currently the acting Secretary on the Northside PAC. And, for the last 3 years, I have helped run the Pumpkin Fair which has been very successful in filling the needs of our school’s enrichment program.

My time in the schools has opened my eyes to many positive and negative issues that happen in our town. For example we have data collectors in our schools during classroom hours. Parents are unaware that some of our younger students get anxious when these observers are in the classroom. If you ask your child if people come into the class in formal attire I am sure at some point they would have said yes.  Why are we parents never notified? The same could be said for our curriculum and the roll out of these programs. Many parents are unaware that in any given year your child is not learning the same as their peer in the same grade but at a different Wilmington school.

Wilmington is certainly fortunate to have six candidates running for school committee. I think it demonstrates that that the public is eager for change and they are more aware of what the school committee encompasses. Certainly many of my opponents have impressive backgrounds in the field of education. But I feel that it would be beneficial to incorporate someone with a different background. My focus would be on communication with parents, with the public and to bring a fresh perspective. I feel the average parent does not process information in the same way a veteran of the educational field would.  I want to be the voice of every parent. If elected, I am confident my skill set would complement the other committee members well.

Sincerely,

Amy Largenton
Wilmington School Committee candidate
