WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Fire Department recently donated approximately $950 worth of street hockey equipment to the Woburn Street School.
The equipment included 50 hockey sticks, 50 balls, 2 goals, and an assortment of goalie equipment.
The Wilmington Fire Department received the equipment as a gift from the Boston Bruins as part of the team’s new community fitness initiative, Bfit. Bfit focuses on providing fitness and dietary education to promote healthier living throughout the community.
The Wilmington Fire Department participated in Bfit’s 1st Annual First Responder Challenge on January 22. Participants, in full firefighter gear, completed an in-arena course, climbing stairs and running concourse laps that spanned the TD Garden’s bowl, premium level and balcony level.
The Department was honored at the February 28 Boston Bruins game for raising $12,900 in pledges for the First Responder Challenge, the highest amount of any fire department participating.
Firefighter Charles Taylor and the entire Fire Department decided to “pay it forward” and donate the brand new street hockey equipment to the Woburn Street School.
“We thank Mr. Taylor, the Boston Bruins, Chief Rick McClellan, and the Wilmington Fire Department for the generous donation to the Woburn Street School, and their support of the Wilmington Public Schools’ wellness program,” said School Committee Chair Julie Broussard, prior to the Committee approving the donation at its March 22 meeting.
