WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Girls Track Team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Wakefield (47 to 39) last Thursday, December 29 at the Reggie Lewis Field House.
“The loss was definitely not for lack of effort, as three of our girls ran some big PRs for themselves,” said Head Coach Brian Schell, referring to Alyssa Bernazani, Abby Genthner, and Shannon Horgan.
“These three girl have brought their best every meet and their hard work is paying off,” continued Schell. “Alyssa looked strong the entire mile and worked our strategy well and didn’t over relax. Seeing Abby progress the entire 2mile and still finishing strong can lead to the potential of breaking 13 minutes. And Shannon showed why she is a captain and setting the example bringing her best when it matters most.”
The team (1-1) kept the meet close despite missing several key contributors who were away on vacation. Despite the loss, Schell believes the Wildcats still have a chance to repeat at league champions by winning out and having Burlington knock off Wakefield. Schell looks forward the Wildctas next meet on Tuesday, January 3 against Watertown.
