WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Softball team ended their season on Thursday afternoon with a 9-6 loss to Gloucester High in the first round of the State Tournament.
Wilmington pounced first, scoring two runs in the first inning off the bat of first baseman Antonia Kieran, plating Dana Goulet and Shannon Horgan. Kieran would also make 2 stellar plays in the field with big digs on low throws to first.
Gloucester responded by scoring one run in each of the first three innings. The Wildcats temporarily put a stop to Gloucester scoring in the fourth inning, thanks to some great defense from Liz Gordon.
Wilmington scored its third run in the 5th inning when Jen Dovidio smashed a lead-off homerun. After two more runs for Gloucester, the Cats would score three additional runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, 6-5, with some timely hitting and smart base running.
The lead wouldn’t last, however, as Gloucester would respond with the final 4 runs of the game. Wilmington pitchers were plagued by a small strike zone from the umpiring crew throughout the game.
“Nerves and some wildness got the best of the Wildcats today,” said Coach Audrey Cabral-Pini. “That said, we had a great season and, with the entire infield coming back next year, the future looks VERY promising.”
