WILDCAT WAKEUP: Grecco Makes 1st Start, Spurr Gets 1st Win, Gillis Earns 1st Save

WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Baseball Team (8-4) came from behind to defeat Reading, 7 to 5, on Monday afternoon at Scanlon Field.

The Wildcats had to scramble to find a starting pitcher thanks to rainouts. Sophomore Chris Grecco stepped forward and made his first start of the year. Grecco battled tough, giving up 5 runs (only 2 earned) in 3 innings.  Matt Spurr came on in relief to pitch three scoreless innings, picking up up his first every varsity win.  Jackson Gillis then recorded his first every varsity save on just 8 pitches.

Wilmington scored two runs in the third innings thanks to RBI singles from Matt Spurr and Brian Cavanaugh, scoring Nick Poli and Graham Smith.

Wilmington’s offense exploded in the fourth inning for five runs on five hits and 2 walks.  Joe Kelley, Robbie Ducharme, Danny Gracia, Graham Smith, and Matt Spurr all scored.

By the end of the game, the Wildcats collected 13 hits.  All Wilmington batters had at least one hit, with Brian Cavanaugh and Chris Grecco collecting doubles.  Wilmington’s top three in the batting order — Smith (2), Spurr (2) and Cavanauagh (3) — knocked in all seven runs.

NEXT UP: The WHS Baseball Team (8-4) takes on Melrose at 3:45pm at Morelli Field in Melrose.
