LOWELL, MA — James J. O’Hara, 71, died peacefully, Saturday, April 16th at Lawrence General Hospital, with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late, Mary E. (O’Connell) O’Hara, to whom he was married for 43 years, until her passing in 2013.
Jim was born in Chelsea, MA on April 27, 1944, son of James and Rita (Sullivan) O’Hara. Jim was educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington High School. He enlisted in the US Marines and proudly served his country. He was a decorated Vietnam veteran receiving numerous medals, including the purple heart. He worked as a Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor at UMass Lowell for more than 35 years before retiring in 2011.
He was an avid cribbage player, playing in many local cribbage leagues. His most precious time was spent with his family. He traveled extensively with his wife, Mary and loved being surrounded by his granddaughters Kayla and Jenna.
Jim is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughter, Maureen Souza and her husband Mark of Lowell and his granddaughters, Kayla and Jenna Souza. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well as many great nieces and nephews.
James was predeceased by his brother, John “Jack” O’Hara.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at DRACUT FUNERAL HOME 2159 Lakeivew Avenue, Dracut on THURSDAY, April 21st from 4 – 8 p.m. His Funeral will be held from the Funeral Home on FRIDAY, April 22nd at 9 AM followed by his Funeral Mass in Holy Family Church, 30 Grafton Street, Lowell at 10 AM.
